Weak Gravitational Lensing by a Sample of X‐Ray–luminous Clusters of Galaxies. II. Comparison with Virial Masses

Abstract: Dynamic velocity dispersion and mass estimates are given for a sample of five X-ray-luminous rich clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z $ 0:3) drawn from a sample of 39 clusters for which we have obtained gravitational lens mass estimates. The velocity dispersions are determined from between nine and 20 redshifts measured with the low-dispersion survey spectrograph (LDSS) of the William Herschel Telescope, and virial radii are determined from imaging using the UH8K mosaic CCD camera on the Universi… Show more

“…Our estimate of the velocity dispersion (σ V = 1302 +107 −71 km s −1 ) agrees with those of Patel et al (2000) and Irgens et al (2002) computed on a much smaller galaxy sample. This high value 4 See http://asc.harvard.edu/ciao/ Table 3).…”

“…Irgens et al (2002) confirm these measurements on the basis of 20 (unpublished) redshifts, six of them in common with those of Patel et al (2000), with z = 0.3207 ± 0.0001 and σ V = 1130 +150 −110 km s −1 . Moreover, they find good agreement between the galaxy velocity dispersion and the dark matter velocity dispersion obtained from the weak gravitational lensing analysis (σ DM = 1240 ± 80 km s −1 ).…”

“…X-ray studies and virial analyses of this cluster are hence also more compatible with lensing studies (Patel et al 2000;Irgens et al 2002). The projected two-dimensional distribution of cluster galaxies in Abell 1995 is clearly elliptical (see Fig.…”

“…Analyses assuming a relaxed cluster will hence naturally differ from weak lensing analyses, where no assumption is made about the dynamical state of the cluster. One example is the virial analysis by Irgens et al (2002), where an unusually high velocity dispersion of σ v = 1680 +340 −229 km s −1 was obtained for Abell 1351, based on radial velocity measurements of 17 cluster galaxies. Such a high velocity dispersion is not uncommon in merging systems.…”
