Weak lensing analysis of RXC J2248.7−4431

Abstract: We present a weak lensing analysis of the cluster of galaxies RXC J2248.7-4431, a massive system at z = 0.3475 with prominent strong lensing features covered by the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). Based on UBVRIZ imaging from the Wide-Field Imager camera at the MPG/ESO 2.2-m telescope, we measure photometric redshifts and shapes of background galaxies. The cluster is detected as a mass peak at 5σ significance. Its density can be parametrized as a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile with… Show more

“…4, we find that the dark matter follows an elongated distribution in the diagonal direction. The same elongation and orientation is found in weak lensing analysis of the same cluster on scales up to 30 arcminutes (Gruen et al 2013). The elongation is in the direction of a second clump in the north-east corner of the field of view.…”

“…This large-scale elongation is aligned with the major axis of a prominent central BCG Monna et al 2014;Richard et al 2014;Zitrin et al 2015), having a similar elongation. This elongation extends well beyond the virial radius of the cluster (Gruen et al 2013), but with an azimuthally averaged large scale massive profile that fits well the NFW form out to a radius of 2 Mpc/h (Umetsu et al 2015). In this paper, we make a strong lensing analysis of the deep new optical HFF data now completed for this cluster, using our general free-form lensing technique (Diego et al 2005a(Diego et al , 2007(Diego et al , 2016Sendra et al 2014).…”

“…Like the other Frontier Field clusters, its map of galaxy density shows significant substructure, with an X-ray peak offset from the primary peak of galaxy density (Gómez et al 2012). Weak-lensing analysis also identified multiple substructures, and gives a mass of the central cluster in agreement with X-ray and SZ calculations (Gruen et al 2013). Selected as a CLASH cluster, the HST imaging revealed a quintuply lensed z∼6 galaxy (Balestra et al 2013;Monna et al 2013).…”

“…We also note that photometric redshifts based on upto five photometric bands are becoming more common as a method for selecting background galaxies (Limousin et al 2007; Gavazzi et al 2009;Gruen et al 2013;Applegate et al 2014;McCleary, dell'Antonio & Huwe 2015;Melchior et al 2015). However photometric redshifts based on a small number of filters are problematic for galaxies with blue observed colours because their spectral energy distribution is relatively featureless.…”
