Weakening of rainfall intensity on wet soils over the wet Asian monsoon region using a high-resolution regional climate model

Abstract: This study estimated the sensitivity of rainfall characteristics (rainfall amount, rainfall frequency, rainfall intensity, and rainfall extremes based on 30-min intervals) to land-surface conditions over Southeast Asia, which has a wet land surface during the rainy season. To obtain the regional difference in sensitivity and simulate basic cloud-precipitation systems, we used a high-resolution regional climate model. To extract the systematic signals of sensitivity and exclude random errors, a series of six se… Show more

“…In this study, the diurnal cycle of precipitation is investigated based on the variation of mean precipitation amount (PA), precipitation frequency (PF), and precipitation intensity (PI). These parameters are necessary factors in determining soil moisture variations, evaporation and runoff levels, and sensible heat flux over land (Qian et al ., 2006; Takahashi and Polcher, 2019). Following Zhang et al .…”

“…The definitions of precipitation characteristics were determined based on previous work by Takahashi (2016), Chen and Dai (2018), and Takahashi and Polcher (2019). Briefly, 3‐hourly precipitation rates of TRMM‐3B42 and model simulations were used to compute precipitation characteristics.…”

“…[280][281][282] Changes in soil moisture and vegetation can, therefore, produce varying effects on rainfall location and intensity. 283,284 Antecedent soil moisture conditions are an important modulator of flooding but less so for more severe flood events. 224 Defoliation has also been identified as a short-term driver of the regional hydrological cycle with enhanced runoff following a destructive tropical cyclone.…”
