This work deals with the electrochemical evaluation of a hybrid coating based on mucilage and prickly pear cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) for corrosion protective applications. The Opuntia streptacantha mucilage was extracted by grinding prickly pear cochineal, and three coatings containing mucilague (CM), cochineal-mucilage (CMC), and cochineal-mucilage without Tween 80 (CMC-T) were formulated. The aluminum working electrodes (WE) were coated by immersion and then left to dry for 72 hours at room temperature. The formed coats were assessed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemical noise, and potentiodynamic polarization curves after 24, 72, and 168 hours of immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. These electrochemical measurements were performed in triplicate to check reproducibility. The Tween 80 plasticizer-free cochineal-mucilage-based hybrid coating reveals more excellent protection against corrosion than uncoated aluminum. Optical micrographs were used to set apart the conditions of the hybrid coating after its valuation, which show the protection of the metallic surface on which it was not coated. Results showed that the hybrid coating has suitable properties as a barrier against corrosion due to its ability to block the aggressive species diffusion by trapping them in the coating structure, which prevents their contact with the metal surface. This property is attributable to better mucilage and cochineal film homogeneity. Also, it acts as a corrosion inhibitor due to its semi-permeable behavior where only water molecules flow through its pores. This hybrid coating showed an excellent corrosion-resistant behavior to be used to protect aluminum.

AMg61 (Al-6.2% Mg), a novel form of high-strength, high-magnesium-content aluminum alloy, has been developed for specific maritime engineering in recent years, while its corrosion behavior in seawater is still unknown. Therefore, the corrosion behavior of AMg61 in the simulated seawater was investigated herein, using a weight-loss test and different electrochemical measurements. In addition, corrosion morphology and chemical contents were characterized by metallography, scanning electron microscopy, and energydispersive spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that intergranular corrosion and microcracks developed first in the second phase of AMg61, followed by pitting corrosion. The matrix of AMg61, on the other hand, exhibited a uniform and exfoliation corrosion. The corrosion rate gradually decreased over time.

Cr‐Al‐Ti‐B‐N hard coating is deposited onto the AISI D2 cold‐worked tool steel by means of a hybrid physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique. The effect of plasma nitriding pre‐treatment on the tribocorrosion behavior of the hard‐coated tool steel is investigated using a ball‐on‐disc sliding wear tribometer equipped with an electrochemical testing set up. Tribocorrosive characteristics are analyzed by optical and scanning electron microscopy, 3D surface profilometry, and open circuit potential (OCP) measurement. The coefficient of friction and OCP varies depending on the degree of damage to the hard coating, such that the point at which the substrate is first exposed can be identified by these measurements. The plasma nitriding pretreatment increases the surface hardness significantly and, therefore, the adhesion of the PVD hard coating to the substrate material. As a consequence, the material's wear resistance is enhanced and its durability against tribocorrosion is improved.
