Wear of artificial denture teeth by use of toothbrushes. Part 1: abrasive wear of anterior teeth.

Abstract: High-strength denture teeth (HS teeth) were developed in order to improve the hardness and wear resistance of conventional plastic denture teeth (PL teeth), while retaining their feature of easy occlusal adjustment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the abrasive wear resistance of HS teeth. We conducted wear tests and measured surface roughness using six types of anterior artificial teeth, i.e., three types of HS teeth and three types of PL teeth, the latter serving as the control. The results of the t… Show more

“…Although brushing is the most widely used method 11,12 , patients with limited motor co-ordination find it difficult to perform 11 . In addition, it is possible for wear of the acrylic resin and superficial damage to relining materials to occur 13,14 and therefore, auxiliary methods can be considered advantageous [15][16][17][18] .…”

“…Some studies have associated saliva in order to simulate oral conditions 9 . The methods used on measurement of abrasion are: weight loss 18 , surface roughness 7 , microscopic examination 4 , 17 , radiometric technique 1 , photographic analysis 17 , checking of brightness loss 12 , 18 , measuring of thickness reduction of complete crown acrylic veneer face and of denture bases 4 , 16 .…”

“…Just a few specific references on abrasion resistance of artificial teeth by brushing were found 9 , 17 . This type of investigation is clinically interesting, aimed at the appropriate selection of materials and methods for denture hygiene, with no significant damage to denture.…”

“…Micro‐filled composite has been introduced as a wear resistant material and used as a denture tooth material for more than a decade 12 . Several studies on wear evaluation for these materials have been conducted 13‐19 . A wide variety of abrasives, measuring instruments, and methods of wear testing make it difficult to assess study results that compare these materials.…”
