Wear resistant tools for reproduction technologies produced by micro powder metallurgy

Abstract: Micro system technology (MST) needs cost effective production techniques and for the development of new MST products new materials are necessary. Reproduction technologies have been developed for large scale production which allow processing of a broad scope of materials (plastic, ceramic and metal). For these, tools are needed which have to fulfil a lot of requirements. In this paper the results of an evaluation of micro powder metallurgy (MPM) as a technology to produce highly productive tools and moulds for… Show more

“…Micro metal injection molding (lMIM) is a potential process for the mass production of complex metal microstructures and microparts (Tay et al 2005;Ruprecht et al 2002;Tomlin 2000;Rota et al 2002). Some application areas are in micro drive technology (microgear), medical technology and hard metal mold insert for micro plastic injection molding (Ruprecht et al 2002;Tomlin 2000;Rota et al 2002). lMIM is a miniaturized variant of conventional metal injection molding (MIM) process.…”

“…The μPIM technology has been applied to producing the wear resistant mold cavity of cemented carbides for the microparts, aiming at overcoming the shortcomings of current production technologies [16] . However, the surface roughness of the cavity is still too high to meet the requirement of large scale production.…”
