The laundry cleaning on an industrial scale has become a highly automated process, carried out by machines using sensors generating very detailed data. Data from these sensors allow the precise control of the laundry operation, often remotely. The combination of new machines with information technology has created a more efficient and cost effective process, enabled by software based on extensible architecture. The operations of a laundry exhibit all the properties of a context-aware system. This paper extends the authors' earlier work on context-aware laundry management architecture emphasizing business processes. In this study, we present architectural details that will aid implementers of the system in their choice of tools, techniques and technologies. In particular, a detailed account of laundry context information is presented. The proposed architectural framework used in the solution is able to monitor and autonomously manage laundry operations. The system employs a layered architecture which allows the separation of system components such as data capture, data processing and business services. An inference and a rule engine help to orchestrate system activities and transmit system status to interested parties through an interface. Tight coupling of system components are eliminated by web services.

Developing pervasive context-aware systems to construct smart space applications has attracted much attention from researchers in recent decade. Although many different kinds of context-aware computing paradigms were built of late years, it is still a challenge for researchers to extend an existing system to different application domains and interoperate with other service systems due to heterogeneity among systems This paper proposes a generic context interpreter to overcome the dependency between context and hardware devices. The proposed generic context interpreter contains two modules: the context interpreter generator and the generic interpreter. The context interpreter generator imports sensor data from sensor devices as an XML schema and produces interpretation scripts instead of interpretation widgets. The generic interpreter generates the semantic context for context-aware applications. A context editor is also designed by employing schema matching algorithms for supporting context mapping between devices and context model.

Abstract-In this paper, techniques and related issues for the definition of a contextual knowledge in ambient-intelligence systems are explored. A logical structure for this kind of system, inspired by a neurobiological brain model, is proposed. Through these considerations, the role and the importance of context awareness in the definition of an artificial organism showing adaptability, pervasiveness, and scalability features are described. Techniques for the definition of a multilayer context representation are explained and practically demonstrated with a test-bed. In the proposed system, a complex event classification is obtained through the fusion of heterogeneous data coming from a set of sensors thanks to the design of a self-organizing map (SOM). The SOM represents the core of the system and testing proofs show good results in the classification of the events taking place in the monitored environment.
