Wearables and the Internet of Things (IoT), Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges: A Survey

Abstract: Smart wearables collect and analyze data, and in some scenarios make a smart decision and provide a response to the user and are finding more and more applications in our daily life. In this paper, we comprehensively survey the most recent and important research works conducted in the area of wearable Internet of Things (IoT) and classify the wearables into four major clusters: (i) health, (ii) sports and daily activity, (iii) tracking and localization, and (iv) safety. The fundamental differences of the algor… Show more

“…Moreover, it can significantly reduce the cost, enrich a user's interaction experience, and boost their quality of life. Findings show that wearables based on IoT technology can bring about endless opportunities, especially for healthcare monitoring applications [10][11][12][13][14][15]. The authors of [10][11][12] also indicate that wearables based on IoT technology would be realized when an integrated IoT system is available that has all of the needed functionalities distributed at various levels.…”

“…With constantly evolving semiconductor technology, it is possible to host IoT-based intelligence on an even smaller scale. Such advances have popularized smart devices that can be worn in the form of a fitness band, a smart garment implanted with sensors, or something as futuristic as a chip implanted into the skin like a tattoo [4]. Such devices, termed as the smart wearables, rely on perceptive sensors to monitor user location and activities and exchange this data with cloud-hosted services to assist in providing a better living experience for the user [5][6][7].…”
