Weaving the exotic web

Abstract: String and M-theory contain a family of branes forming U -duality multiplets. In particular, standard branes with codimension higher than or equal to two, can be explicitly found as supergravity solutions. However, whether domain-wall branes and space-filling branes can be found as supergravity solutions is still unclear. In this paper, we firstly provide a full list of exotic branes in type II string theory or M-theory compactified to three or higher dimensions. We show how to systematically obtain background… Show more

“…Their existence has already been argued for -they correspond to the 1-exotic branes completing the T-duality orbit [9,19]. The non-geometric backgrounds found at order α = 3, 4, 5 capture all 1-exotic branes known in the literature [16,18]. The 0-exotic codimension-0 object [9 0…”

“…They are present in abundance in the E 11 approach [8] as brane charges [9,10]. This also indicates that, string-theoretically, low codimension branes (such as exotic, solitonic branes, domain walls and spacetime filling ones) couple electrically to mixed symmetry tensor fields [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19], which can be exotic electromagnetic duals of the graviton or the Kalb-Ramond field. As such they are generalizations of magnetic monopoles both in higher dimensions and for (linearized) gravity.…”

“…This leads to M‐theory generalisations of the exotic fluxes described for DFT and the appropriate exotic brane solutions that act as their source. This is reported in depth in [] where a huge spectrum of solutions have been constructed using EFT.…”
