Web-Based Simulation in Psychiatry Residency Training: A Pilot Study

Abstract: The CSAT was an effective educational tool in simulating patient-physician interactions, and it may serve as a model for use of other web-based simulations to augment traditional teaching methods in residency education.

“…Various VP systems include video combined with voice recognition, conversation with the VP, on-screen help, and learner feedback, as well as links to additional teaching materials [9][10][11]. The performance in VP and SP encounters correlate, providing evidence of validity for the VPs use as educational tools [10][11][12]. VPs may be particularly suitable for convergent learners who value technological applications of knowledge [23].…”

“…In addition, today's education occurs in a distributed model, on geographically distant campuses, and it is delivered to millennial students who accept and seek technology as a teaching method [6]. While simulation technology was vastly adopted by emergency medicine, surgery and internal medicine for outcome-based teaching and competency assessment [7], its mental health teaching, and evaluation applications [8][9][10][11][12] are slow to be implemented. While teaching and practice of psychiatry are traditionally believed to be less amenable to simulation, the evidence that cognitive remediation for schizophrenia and computer-based cognitive-behavioral treatments for anxiety are effective and well accepted by patients is growing [13,14].…”

“…[19] It was further recently clinically used in psychiatric consultation, [20] psychological and psychiatric assessment, [21,22] treatment and training. [23][24][25][26] Unquestionably, computer simulation is progressively gaining presence in the mental health field, but there has been no focus on patterns of hospital admission and utilization to search for optimized solutions to overcrowding. Our study attempts to address this by building a computer simulation of hospital admission based on statistical analysis of the hospital's historical admission data.…”
