Webern as Teacher

Abstract

Although known mainly as a composer and major exponent of serial techniques, Anton von Webern (1883–1945) was also a master teacher—a fact many of his pupils attest to in this article commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death. The article is adapted from a chapter of Hans Molden-hauer's recently completed biography, Anton von Webern, Chronicle of His Life and Works, soon to be published. Mr. Moldenhauer, president of the International Webern Society and founder-director of the Moldenhauer Archives in Spokane, Washington, including the Webern Archive, is author of The Death of Anton von Webern and Anton von Webern: Perspectives.—Ed.
