Weed Control Using an Enclosed Thermal Heating Apparatus

Abstract: Weed control by heat or flaming typically uses flames to burn small weeds, directed away from desired crops. This research studied an enclosed flaming system for weed control before turfgrass establishment. Field research trials were conducted to explore the efficacy of a PL-8750 flame sanitizer at two application timings. Treatments included various application methods of PL-8750 flame sanitizer and common thermal and chemical weed control methods. Data were weed control relative to the control treatment. Spe… Show more

“…where C is the control, N is the total number of weeds per plot in the control treatment, and T is the total number of weeds per plot in the treated plot (Hoyle et al, 2012). Percentage control was reported on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 represents no weed control, and 100 represents complete weed control.…”

“…(Dahlquist et al, 2007). Weed control across thermal treatments were equal to or greater than the comparison chemical treatment (Dazomet at 389 kg ha −1 ) while Broadleaf and grassy weeds were better controlled compared with sedge weeds (Hoyle et al, 2012). Weeds effect by flame treatment depending on weeds species, stage of development of weeds and burner parameters.…”

“…Thermal weed control can be used to sterilize a seedbank or spot spray or burn existing weeds. Hoyle, McElroy, and Rose (2012) documented good broadleaf and grassy weed but less yellow nutsedge ( Cyperus esculentus L.) control before tall fescue establishment when using an enclosed flaming system. The authors reported that 6 wk after seeding, tall fescue reached >60% establishment when flaming was applied in fall vs. summer.…”
