Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation As a Tool to Reduce Anemia among Primary School Children in Cambodia

Abstract: The prevalence of anemia decreased from 62% to 12% and from 57% to 26% in children 5 to 11 years of age in two rural primary schools in Kampot Province, Cambodia, after oral weekly supplementation with iron-folic acid tablets for 20 weeks and with vitamin A and mebendazole twice per year. In 12- to 15-year-old children, success was less marked. The prevalence of hookworm infestation did not change, but the number of eggs in the stool decreased drastically. The intervention had no significant influence on stunt… Show more

“…Southeast Asia is a region of the world with a major burden of IDA (Scrimshaw, 2004) and anemia is a major public health problem in Cambodia (Longfils et al, 2005), in particular during the first 2 years of life (HKI, 1999). Adequate nutrition is considered to be a basic human right Figure 3 Disease symptoms: listlessness, vomiting, diarrhea and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) were monitored by weekly questionnaires and during twice-weekly visits of trained village health workers.…”

“…For these reasons Honduras would benefit more from the implementation of a cost-effective preconceptional folic acid supplementation programme that would reach the poor urban and rural high-risk populations. Recently, the regional office of the WHO in South Asia (Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam) published results on community trials assessing the effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation to the population with a pill containing both Fe and folic acid (37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42) . The strategy tailored the supplementation intervention and market strategy to each country's culture and values.…”

“…In a large-scale, 4-nation multicenter trial, the International Research on Infant Supplementation Study [12] , it was established that daily iron supplementation is more effective in a time-dependent manner than weekly dosing, but weekly dosing was significantly superior to placebo. In fact, weekly oral iron supplements reduced anemia in rural Cambodian schoolchildren [22] . Moreover, a systematic review of 55 trials suggests efficacy of iron supplementation for an iron-responsive change in hemoglobin among children under 6 years of age in nonmalarial areas on the order of 40-60% [23] .…”
