Weighing the evidence of ecological risk from PAHs contamination in the estuarine environment of Salina Cruz Bay, México

Abstract: Results of bulk-phase chemical measurements, toxicological tests combined with bioaccumulation measures in fishes, were used to evaluate the toxicity of the 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the sediment collected from eight stations of the Ventosa Estuarine System, located close to the main center of processing oil in the Mexican Pacific coast. Levels of the sum of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons varied from 22 to 6,850 microg kg(-1) dry weight. Based on sediment quality guidelines, the… Show more

“…Near-shore coastal areas such as estuaries are typically subject to a variety of stressors, both natural and anthropogenic, which can impair the health and fitness of resident biota (Salazar-Coria et al, 2010). To be able to ensure healthy, safe and prosperous oceans for the benefit of current and future generations, an ecosystem-based management is need to support sustainable developments, while taking into account the Precautionary Principle (Hellou et al, 2006;Council Directive, 2008/56/EC, 2008.…”

“…The strong petrogenic influence on PAH signatures in biota from the Indiana Ship Canal is not surprising, given that an oil refinery and a large number of petroleum storage tanks are located adjacent to the canal (JML pers obs); groundwater and surface waters there are heavily contaminated with petroleum (USEPA 2009). Salazar-Coria et al (2010) calculated TEQ of the sediment by multiplying geometric-mean sediment concentrations by fish potency factors derived by Barrona et al (2004) from CYP1A induction and AhR binding data. We multiplied TEFs (Table 1) by the sediment concentrations to give the following TEQ sediment : ISC (17.64); IRMsh (5.87); LCalR (2.8); and BgMsh (0.54).…”

“…Most toxic effects of PAHs are derived from studies on other organisms (8)(9)(10)(11). Nonetheless, because of the similarity of biological systems in different species, it is likely that all mammals, including humans, will be affected in a similar way.…”
