“…The incidence of overweight and obesity was lower than that reported in 2488 Chinese adults aged 20-45 years in seven provinces in China over an 8-year period from 1989 to 1997, where the number of overweight subjects (BMI X25 kg/m 2 ) almost tripled in men and doubled in women (Bell et al, 2001). Men in the Hong Kong study also had a higher incidence compared with women.…”

“…Varying patterns of change in weight status for Chinese children and adults are hypothesized to be influenced by biological differences in adults and children, variations in how children and adults are affected by environmental change and possible interaction between biological and environmental factors . Increases in the overweight prevalence among adults have been linked with decreases in work-and transport-related physical activity, while a relationship between overweight and a high-fat, low-fiber diet has been found for both children and adults (Paeratakul et al, 1998;Bell et al, 2001Bell et al, , 2002Wang et al, 2003). More research is needed in order to better understand the relationship between weight status changes for children and adults.…”

“…Nonetheless, very high levels of overweight and obesity exist across the lower-and middle-income world and rates of increase are great (Mendez et al, 2005;Popkin, 2006;Popkin et al, 2006). This is certainly true in China, where there has been a recent and dramatic rise in the number of overweight adults in the recent past (Bell et al, 2001;Du et al, 2002). Further, rapid economic and social change has led to increased use of time-and laborsaving technologies, potentially reducing energy expenditure in both the home and occupational sectors (Popkin, 2003).…”

“…However, evidence from studies that have examined physical activity in the domestic and occupational spheres has shown these sources to be important (Weller and Corey, 1998;Evenson et al, 2003). In China, occupational activity has been shown to be the key modifiable determinant of weight gain (Bell et al, 2001). However, there is limited population-based, longitudinal research on weight and activity trends.…”
