Weight loss efficacy of a novel mobile Diabetes Prevention Program delivery platform with human coaching

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the weight loss efficacy of a novel mobile platform delivering the Diabetes Prevention Program.Research Design and Methods43 overweight or obese adult participants with a diagnosis of prediabetes signed-up to receive a 24-week virtual Diabetes Prevention Program with human coaching, through a mobile platform. Weight loss and engagement were the main outcomes, evaluated by repeated measures analysis of variance, backward regression, and mediation regression.ResultsWeight loss at 16 and 24 w… Show more

“…diabetes, metformin, skeletal muscles, vitamin D 1 | INTRODUCTION Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic catabolic disorder characterized by either the insufficient insulin, or the lack of body response to it. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) represents 90% from the overall prevalence of diabetes, which is characterized by hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia resulting from defects in absolute or relative insulin secretion, or reduced sensitivity to its action on the tissue (insulin resistance) (Michaelides, Raby, Wood, Farr & Toro-Ramos, 2016). Furthermore, it is associated with adverse complications such as increased risk of cardiovascular diseases including renal failure, atherosclerosis, ophthalmia, and neurotoxicity (Wang, Wang, & Chan, 2013).…”

“…However, initiating and maintaining healthy lifestyle changes remain a genuine challenge [33]. Health coaching through telephone interviews is one of the emerging tools that have been shown to improve favorable health behaviors in patients suffering from chronic diseases such type 2 diabetes, as well as for prediabetes [34,35]. With regard to studies performed in the workplace, Wilson et al [36] published selected data from a randomized controlled trial conducted in 418 city/county employees in order to analyze the impact of the "Fuel Your Life" program.…”

“…Another intervention that included in-person DPP curriculum sessions and a mobile app for selfmonitoring of weight, activity, and diet resulted in 6.2 kg weight loss at 5 months, but failed to demonstrate any significant change in glycemic measures [15]. A hybrid program combining human coaching and digital tools, Noom Coach, (Noom, Inc., New York) demonstrated significant weight loss but did not report glycemic data [16]. Nonetheless, given the significant effect on weight reduction seen with this intervention, the CDC included Noom in their recently established DPP recognition registry [28].…”

“…While these have shown promise for diabetes prevention, most of these programs have required either active learning on the part of the user [14] (e.g. on-line curriculum), in-person training [15], or have a major component of human coaching [16,17], which limits scalability and longterm adherence, as interventions that rely on human coaching require substantial human resources and professional training as well as sustained commitment on the part of participants.…”
