Weight loss induced by 6‐month lifestyle intervention improves early endothelial activation and fibrinolysis in obese adolescents

Abstract: The present study demonstrated increased endothelial activation and impairment of the fibrinolytic system in early life, which is in part reversible by a 6-month lifestyle intervention.

“…26 Roberts et al 12 reported significant reductions in sE-Selectin following an intensive 2-week diet and exercise intervention in overweight youth. In a 6-month lifestyle intervention consisting of once-weekly physical activity and family-focused behavioral and lifestyle modification sessions, Huang and colleagues 27 reported significant reductions in sE-Selectin. However, the observed improvements in sE-Selectin were only noted in participants who exhibited decreases in BMI, whereas participants who remained BMI stable did not decrease sE-Selectin.…”

“…56 Huang et al noted improvements in adhesion molecules (selectin E) and fibrinolysis parameters (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1) in participants who showed reduction in BMI z score after a 6-month lifestyle intervention, together with improved triglycerides and glucose homeostasis. 57 These trials primarily focused on exercise interventions, with improved endothelial function, albeit not often to normal when control subjects were included, and some improvement in CIMT in longer studies. These improvements were achieved with concomitant improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors, adiposity and biomarkers, but without normalization of adiposity.…”

“…Meal replacements are anything we can consume that is already proportioned and ready to eat -and we can eat the whole thing, often packed with extra protein and fiber for greater satiety. Meal replacements are characterized by liquid formulas, powder Keywords: Obesity, Meal Replacement, Weight Reduction formulations reconstituted with water or milk, or nutrition bars that are typically fortified with vitamins and minerals and with or without fiber [4]. Consumption of high fiber starchy foods, mainly whole wheat flour and brown rice has gone down considerably and has been replaced by low fiber refined wheat flour and polished rice [5].…”
