“…These have included depressive disorders (Vaughn & Leff, 1976 a;Hooley et al 1986) and recent onset mania (Miklowitz et al 1986). In addition, the EE index has been a predictor of adherence to treatment for anorexia nervosa (Szmukler et al 1985) and the maintenance of weight loss in a weight reduction programme (Fishman-Havstad & Marston, 1984). Furthermore, the emotional responses of caregivers other than family members have similar predictive value (Brown et al 1958(Brown et al , 1962.…”

“…These studies differed from the schizophrenia studies in that outcome was measured by diet compliance, 49 weight gain after treatment for obesity, 50 and premature termination of treatment in patients with anorexia. 7 The cutoffs for determining high EE also varied across the 3 studies.…”

“…Leffand Vaughn, 1985;Hahlweg and Goldstein, 1987;Hermanns et al, 1989). EE is a strong indicator of relapse in schizophrenia and depression (Vaughn and Leff, 1976a), and investigations have been extended to include other illnesses, such as childhood epilepsy (Brown and Jadresic, 1984), obesity (Fishman-Havstad and Marston, 1984) changes in EE in the course of systemic family therapy with a group of child referrals to a family therapy clinic. Vostanis estimated EE from the video recording of the family therapy session.…”
