GTAW can be tricky, but with a laser, it can be done successfully. Previous studies of the weldability of stainless steels indicate that the basic condition for ensuring high quality of welded joints and reducing thermal distortions to minimum is reducing the heat input of welding that is ensured only by laser welding. CO2 laser beam welding with a continuous wave, which is widely used for stainless steels components, is a high energy density and low heat input process. The result of this is a small heat-affected zone (HAZ), which cools very rapidly with very little distortion, and a high depth-to-width ratio for the fusion zone.
