The FRINGE series explores the roles that complexity, ambivalence and immeasurability play in social and cultural phenomena. A cross-disciplinary initiative bringing together researchers from the humanities, social sciences and area studies, the series examines how seemingly opposed notions such as centrality and marginality, clarity and ambiguity, can shift and converge when embedded in everyday practices. Alena Ledeneva is Professor of Politics and Society at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies of UCL. Peter Zusi is Lecturer at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies of UCL.By adopting the tropes of 'repair' and 'waste', this book innovatively manages to link various material registers from architecture, intergenerational relations, affect and museums with ways of making the past present. Through a rigorous yet transdisciplinary method, Martínez brings together different scales and contexts that would often be segregated out. Originally, it appears as a critique of discourses about the past, and yet it unfolds as an ethnography of pastness that deals with the contemporary city, geographies of affect, generational change and materiality. The work interweaves a number of topics related to how physical and cultural wasting are rarely synchronised, accounting for diverse ways of treating inheritances and the different intensities of urban memory that they generate. By studying the material and social afterlife of the Soviet world in Estonia, I attempt to show the dialectical relation between construction and demolition, and how the need to build something new entails the disinvestment and neglect of the legacies from the old regime. Zusammenfassung: Die Begriffe "national" und "europäisch" markieren unterschiedliche Raumrahmen für die Interpretation und die politische Steuerung der Gesellschaft. Diese treten im Zuge der europäischen Integration zueinander zunehmend in Konkurrenz. Die Einstellungen und Interessen unterschiedlicher Akteursgruppen beziehen sich auf die unterschiedlichen Raumrahmen und führen damit zu einem Konfliktverhältnis zwischen "national" und "europäisch". Damit werden Spannungen sichtbar, die für die Europäisierung der Gesellschaft wichtig und darum für die Entwicklung der Europasoziologie konstitutiv sind. Die Soziologie muss sich auf diese Konstellation einstellen, indem sie ihre eigene kategoriale (nationale) Raumrahmung überwindet und die in der Praxis vorfindbaren Raumrahmen der Gesellschaft als empirisches Datum und als Teil ihres Untersuchungsgegenstandes nimmt. Abstract:The terms "national" and "European" mark different spacial frames which are relevant for the interpretation as well as political regulation of the society. In the case of progressive European integration, these spacial frames are increasingly compete. Attitudes and interests of different actor groups relate to these spacial frames, thus turning "national" and "European" into the poles of a conflict relationship. In this way tensions become visible, which are crucial for the Europeanization of society hence fundamental for the development of the Sociology of Europe. Sociology needs to be adapted to this constellation by overcoming its nationally framed categories and by understanding spacial frames that develop in practice as empirical data and thus as a part of its subject.
