“…13 In addition, hyperemesis gravidarum, [14][15][16] chemical therapy, 17 anorexia nervosa, 18 AIDS, 19 and even wrong formula feeding 20 were also reported as predisposing factors (Table 1). 6,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27] Because the healthy body's reserves of thiamine are sufficient for up to 18 days, any condition that induces thiamine deficiency lasting 2 to 3 weeks may lead to WE. Prophylactic use of thiamine with nutritional guidance should be recommended to avoid the development of WE in patients with possible thiamine deficiency.…”

“…Evidence suggests that TD occurs in chronic alcoholics at a frequency of at least 25–31 % and up to 80 % [17]. TD adversely affects many organ systems including the cardiovascular [18], muscular [19], gastrointestinal [20], and central and peripheral nervous systems [21]. The central nervous system (CNS) is particularly sensitive to TD, because of its dependence on TPP-mediated metabolic pathways involved in energy metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis [22].…”

“…2,16,17 Given that the majority of patients for whom TPN is indicated have no other way of acquiring said vitamin, its deficiency is due to the lack of supplementation of the same in the parenteral nutrition bag. The recommended dose of thiamine for a healthy adult is 1,4 mg per day or 0,5 mg per 1000 kcal consumed.…”
