What Antibullying Program Designs Motivate Student Intervention in Grades 5 to 8?

Abstract: Educators detect and intervene in a small proportion of bullying incidents. Although students are present when many bullying episodes occur, they are often reluctant to intervene. This study explored attributes of antibullying (AB) programs influencing the decision to intervene. Grade 5, 6, 7, and 8 students (N = 2,033) completed a discrete choice experiment examining the influence of 11 AB program attributes on the decision to intervene. Multilevel analysis revealed 6 latent classes. The Intensive Programming… Show more

“…Even though TPB is a thoroughly tested theory in other fields, such as health sciences and health-related behavior, its relation to teachers' bullying intervention behavior is rather limited (Hawley & Williford, 2015). Several studies argued that the TPB may be relevant for understanding the potential role of teacher self-efficacy and attitudinal change in predicting their intentions and behaviors to tackle bullying (e.g., Cunningham et al, 2019a;Gregus et al, 2017;Hawley & Williford, 2015;MacFarlane & Woolfson, 2013;van Verseveld et al, 2019;Yoon et al, 2011). However, no previous study tested the framework as a whole and applied it to teachers in relation to bullying.…”

“…The same meta-analysis also showed that programs that are more intensive were more effective, as were programs including parent meetings, disciplinary methods, and improved playground supervision. A discrete choice experiment examining 11 hypothetical anti-bullying program attributes demonstrated that the number of the implemented antibullying measures in a school moderates the decisions to intervene (Cunningham et al 2019). Analyses revealed that 28.7% of the participating students in grades 5 to 8 would intervene if the school implemented intensive anti-bullying measures like daily program activities, a high number of playground supervisions, mandatory reporting, and suspensions for perpetrators.…”

“…These diagnostics can be used not only to recognize victims or at-risk students but also to design interventions to target relevant students in the peer group (Valente 2012). Therefore, interventions are tailored to the particular situation (Cunningham et al 2019;Saarento et al 2015). Multiple studies have shown that network diagnostics can be used effectively in practice to reduce other health problems (for an overview, see Valente and Pitts 2017).…”
