What are the factors that facilitate or hinder resilience in older spousal dementia carers? A qualitative study

Abstract: There is a need to move towards more ecological models of resilience. We propose that access to assets and resources is not always sufficient to facilitate resilience. Implications of these findings are discussed.

“…In addition, these analyses indicated the positive impact of inner psychological attributes such as mastery and sense of competence, and, to a lesser extent, the absence of guilt feelings. This corresponds with earlier findings from qualitative interviews reporting the importance of staying positive [10]. Previously, resilience was found to be positively related to a problem-focused coping style and the use of distancing, by not letting situations get to oneself and looking on the bright side, while escape-avoidance coping appeared to have a negative impact on resilience [54].…”

“…Compensatory adaptations may enable carers to ameliorate the effects of an individual's cognitive impairment; for example, by findings ways of keeping a conversation going without placing as much pressure on the individual's cognitive resources (Haberstroh, Neumeyer, Krause, Franzmann, & Pantel, 2011). Qualitative research indicates that acquisition of knowledge and skills can help facilitate resilience and maintaining a relationship with those cared for (Donnellan, Bennett, & Soulsby, 2015). These factors can be supported by communication and interaction based training interventions, which can enhance perceived coping and control (Eggenberger et al, 2013).…”
