What do they TEL(L)? A systematic analysis of master programs in technology-enhanced learning

Abstract: This article contributes to the debate on the growing number of interdisciplinary study programs in learning and technology, and aims to understand the diversity of programs as well as curricula structure in an international landscape. Scientific fields share their knowledge and recruit young researchers by offering discipline-specific study programs. Thus, study programs are a reflection of the fields they represent. As technology-enhanced learning is considered to be particularly interdisciplinary and hetero… Show more

“…It is important educating stakeholders about the benefits and potential impact of the technology, overcome resistance to change, and address concerns or misconceptions. “…This was followed by the rise of 'technology enhanced learning' towards the 2010s (Bayne, 2015) as a result of national policy changes, with TEL becoming the lingua franca of the Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association (UCISA, 2008) and the UK higher education system at large (Kennedy & Dunn, 2018). Proponents of TEL argued that it required a more structured and nuanced understanding of learning design, and greater consideration of learner needs (e.g., Laurillard et al, 2009), reflected in a recent systematic review of TEL Masters programs (Fominykh et al, 2022). However, criticism was levelled at the "unconsidered and unreflected way" (Kirkwood & Price, 2014, p. 9) in which it was used, with questions posed about its "effective educational contribution" (ibid., p. 26).…”

“…The textbook is not the only sources of information anymore. Through interactive multimedia, students can visualize complex concepts, develop creative thinking, and engage in interesting learning activities (Flavin & Quintero, 2018;Fominykh et al, 2022;Osman et al, 2022). This creates a more interactive learning environment, which can increase student interest and motivation.…”
