What Expertise Can Tell About Mathematical Learning and Cognition

Abstract: The investigation of mathematical expertise can shape numerical and mathematical cognition theories by providing insights about the modifications that the neurocognitive system undergoes when mastering mathematical knowledge. In particular, both qualitative and quantitative methods should be combined within a developmental perspective to identify those promoting factors that lead some individuals to focus their interests on mathematics and possibly become experts in the field. The behavioral and neural differe… Show more

“…The IPS has been highlighted as a key brain region in numerical and mathematical cognition and learning as supported by methodologically diverse studies including nonhuman primates, neurological and neurodevelopmental populations, and mathematical experts based primarily on neurofunctional and structural studies in healthy humans [46,[57][58][59][60][61]. Our results expanded this understanding by showing that the developmental stage influences the relation between IPS neurotransmitter concentration and MA.…”

“…Previous studies suggest that they differ from nonmathematicians in both domain-general and domain-specific ability factors (for a recent overview, cf. Sella & Cohen Kadosh, 2018). First, expert mathematicians -similar to academics in other areas -display above-average levels of general intelligence (Wai, 2014).…”

“…Convergent mathematics learning activities can form basic skills [19]. These activities generally tend to be algorithmic, mechanistic, and routine math exercises [20]. The ability to think creatively is divergent and requires the activity of investigating mathematical problems from various perspectives.…”
