What factors condition the financial viability of sheltered employment centres? Empirical evidence

Abstract: Nowadays, employment is a challenge for people but more for disabled ones. Prior literature shows that, at a European level, there are different ways for people with disabilities to find a job, such as a quota system, sheltered workshops, supported employment, etc. In Spain, sheltered employment centres are prototypes of sheltered workshops aimed at integrating more people with disabilities into the workplace. This research project aims to give visibility to these firms and to gain an understanding of their ec… Show more

“…Another interesting finding is the highest-ranked predictor for both SMEs and new ventures is the profitability ratio. This is in line with Gelashvili et al (2022), who proposed that profitability is one of the most pivotal ratios for long-term survival of any type of firm. However, for SMEs, it is the retained earnings to assets ratio whereas, for new ventures, it is the return on assets (EBIDTA).…”

“…Explanatory variables include the respondents' age, gender, whether they were frequent public transport users, employment status, and place of residence. The importance of these variables have been widely used to classify the sample Dabić et al 2021;Gelashvili et al 2022;Martínez-Navalón et al 2020;Trivedi and Teichert 2019).…”

“…The second part of the analysis is based on linear regression and the correlation table to answer the hypotheses raised in this work. Linear regression and correlation tables have been used in research to measure the relationship and effects between dependent and independent variables (Gelashvili et al 2022;Ting et al 2021). First, the Breusch-Pagan test (Breusch and Pagan 1980) was used to detect heteroscedasticity in the models.…”

“…The variables age (number of years before May 2021 that the company was founded) and size (the number of employees) were studied to analyse their relationship with the profitability of the company. Some studies have found a positive relationship between ROA and the two variables [62,63]. Bearing in mind the main characteristics of sheltered employment centres, the business sector variable was divided into two parts: service and manufacturing companies, since previous studies have shown that most of these centres operate in the service sector.…”

“…We chose the variable sales growth because research carried out by Miethlich and Oldenburg [64] has shown that social inclusion, as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, contributes in a positive way to sales growth. In addition to these ratios, the fundamental economic and financial ratios necessary for the company's profitability were analysed [62]. The first step in the data analysis was a descriptive analysis of the companies and the variables studied.…”
