What incentives increase data sharing in health and medical research? A systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundThe foundation of health and medical research is data. Data sharing facilitates the progress of research and strengthens science. Data sharing in research is widely discussed in the literature; however, there are seemingly no evidence-based incentives that promote data sharing.MethodsA systematic review (registration: 10.17605/OSF.IO/6PZ5E) of the health and medical research literature was used to uncover any evidence-based incentives, with pre- and post-empirical data that examined data sharing rate… Show more

“…Or a system in which scientists are rewarded for having their work independently reproduced by other groups? I am not necessarily suggesting the adoption of a new metric, but I certainly find the idea of ‘Open Science’ badges appealing . Such badges would be consistent with the knowledge‐seeking logic of science, but will they also support the non‐epistemic quest for recognition?…”

“…Open Science practices among researchers include a lack of incentive and/or opportunity from the gatekeepers of scientific publishing such as journal and grant funding bodies (Allen & Mehler, 2018;Munafò et al, 2017 Offering badges has been shown to improve the adoption of Open Science practices (Kidwell et al, 2016;Rowhani-Farid, Allen, & Barnett, 2017 (Ladd, 2019).…”

“…Optimizing the research life cycle now involves responsible data stewardship, as opposed to ownership. The old paradigm—in which individual investigators maintain indefinite ownership of the data resulting from their publicly funded work—results in now unacceptable research waste, including hidden data and irreproducible findings 20. Single-instance use of research data and the inability to access data resulting from studies limit the impact of trauma research funding.…”
