What is groundwater and what does this mean to fauna? – An opinion

Abstract: a b s t r a c tMany subsurface waters are considered groundwater but are influenced in shallow depths by hyporheic, parafluvial and/or soil interception water to such a degree that groundwater fauna (stygofauna) communities may be significantly altered. Recharge, even if spatially and temporally distinct, delivers input of dissolved oxygen, organic matter (OM), and nutrients that caters sustainably for ubiquists such as stygophiles and hyporheic fauna, but renders the life of uncompetitive stygobites difficult… Show more

“…Larger-body-sized biota such as crustacea move over larger distances than microorganisms and thus integrate over larger aquifer volumes and cover parts of the meso scale (Schmidt and Hahn, 2012), since they potentially use more different physical and chemical situations in a shorter period of time than shorter-range organisms. Thus they "see" more situations than could be connected by diffusion/advection in such systems and may act as mediators between the scales.…”

“…Note that protozoan grazing on biofilms and micro colonies modify their architecture, as known from streams (Böhme et al, 2009), and thus create further heterogeneity on the micro scale. Knowledge on search behaviour, feeding preferences, as well as feeding rates is still too scarce for fauna in unconsolidated as well as fractured rock aquifers to make valid assumptions (Schmidt and Hahn, 2012).…”

“…These geohabitats differ significantly in their hydrogeological and hydrochemical characteristics, supporting this typology. The differences are likely to influence groundwater communities (Gibert et al, 1994;Datry et al, 2005;Hahn, 2006;Schmidt & Hahn, 2012), illustrating the advantage of this higher resolution. However, all abiotic parameters remain highly variable within geo-habitats, reflecting geological heterogeneity.…”

“…The total groundwater inflow is usually lower, or shows 3 higher variation in western coastal rivers, due to steeper topography and glacial-alluvial valley deposits of 4 coarser sand and gravels of high permeability (Koestler & Brabrand, 2001). Geological heterogeneity will 5 produce a potential for local underwater sites of groundwater flux, with heterogeneous hyporheic substrates 6 (Hayashi & Rosenberry, 2002;Schmidt & Hahn 2012) that will determine microspatial influx sites (Heggenes et 7 al., 2010), thus creating spatial variability in habitat and spawning sites with regard to flow, temperature and 8 oxygen (Power et al, 1999). The hyporheic zone is an important component of the lotic ecosystem (Ward, 1989) 9 with variable flux of groundwater and surface water, creating high vertical heterogeneity with associated 10 ecological implications.…”
