Purpose This study aims to uncover apple preference and consumption in Indonesia, to disclose the risk of non-halal contamination of apples and the importance of maintaining the halal integrity of apples along the supply chain and to uncover the impacts of food miles of apples along supply chain segmentation. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted mixed research methods under a fully mixed sequential dominant status design (QUAN → qual). Data were collected through a survey in some Indonesian provinces (N = 396 respondents). Samples were collected randomly from individual consumers. The qualitative data were collected through interviews with 15 apple traders in Indonesia. Data were analysed using crosstab, chi-square and descriptive analysis. Findings First, Muslim consumers believe in the risk of chemical treatment of apples because it can affect the halal status of apples. Second, Indonesian consumers consider the importance of halal certification of chemical-treated apples and the additives for apple treatments. Third, the insignificance of domestic apple preference contributes to longer food miles at the first- and middle-mile stages (preference for imported apples). Fourth, apple consumption and shopping distance contribute to the longer food miles problem at the last-mile stage. Fifth, longer food miles have negative impacts, such as emissions and pollution, food loss and waste, food insecurity, financial loss, slow development of the local economy and food unsafety. Practical implications This research has implications for the governments, farmers, consumers (society) and business sectors. Originality/value This study proposes a framework of food miles under a halal supply chain (halal food miles) to reduce the risk of food miles and improve halal integrity. The findings from this research have theoretical implications for the development of the food mile theory, halal food supply chain and green supply chain.

Pasar global yang kini semakin meluas membuat konsumen harus lebih berhati-hati terutama ketika membeli produk makanan. Konsumsi makanan halal merupakan kewajiban bagi umat muslim. Salah satu produk makanan yang sedang banyak digemari beberapa tahun belakangan adalah yoghurt. Yoghurt diklaim memiliki banyak manfaat baik bagi kesehatan tubuh khususnya pencernaan karena mengandung bakteri baik atau probiotik. Yoghurt dibuat dengan melakukan fermentasi pada susu, dengan bantuan bakteri asam laktat. Sebagai produk hasil fermentasi yoghurt memiliki titik kritis kehalalan. Untuk menjaga tekstur yoghurt umumnya ditambahkan penstabil nabati maupun hewani. Pada artikel ini akan dibahas lebih dalam mengenai sejarah, proses pembuatan, komposisi serta titik kritis yoghurt berdasarkan studi literatur. Tujuan dari penulisan artikel ini adalah membantu pembaca untuk lebih memahami hal-hal yang perlu diperhatikan saat akan membeli produk olahan fermentasi yoghurt. Sebagai informasi tambahan terdapat 10 produk yoghurt yang banyak beredar di Indonesia yang akan dibandingkan komposisi serta status halal pada produk tersebut. Berdasarkan hasil perbandingan yang dilakukan, 80% produk yang banyak beredar di Indonesia sudah memiliki sertifikasi halal yang diakui MUI.

Moral approval of xenotransplantation in Egypt: associations with religion, attitudes towards animals and demographic factors

Xenotransplantation has great potential as an alternative to alleviate the shortage of organs for donation. However, given that the animal most suited for xenotransplantation is the pig, there are concerns that people in Muslim countries may be more hesitant to morally approve of these procedures. In this study, the moral approval of xenotransplantation was assessed in a group of 895 participants in Egypt. The results showed that religiosity itself does not predict moral approval of xenotransplantation, but religious identity does, as Muslims are less likely to approve of xenotransplantation than Christians. However, the strongest predictor of moral approval of xenotransplantation was gender, with women displaying less approval. A partial mediating factor in this association was concern for animal welfare. Based on these results, some implications for public policy are discussed.
