What is the Best Treatment for a Cancer Patient with Thrombosis?

Abstract: The relationship between venous thromboembolism and cancer has been known for many years, and there is solid scientific evidence addressing the adequate treatment of this condition in oncology patients. However, established prescribing habits, individual patient challenges, and uncertainty concerning treatment justifies poor adherence to published guidelines. This paper reviews venous thromboembolism treatment while focusing on vitamin K antagonists, low-molecular-weight heparins, and novel oral anticoagulants… Show more

“…However, it is known that the disaccharide constituents and chain lengths of GAGs are critical to their property and biological functions [15, 17, 18]; for example, 4S6S CS-E is a potent antiviral agent [32], HA with high molecular weight demonstrates antiangiogenic activity effect [33] while low molecular weight HA fragments can stimulate angiogenesis [34], heparins are anticoagulants with low molecular weight heparins having higher anti-FXa activity and lower incidence of side effects [12]. Therefore, the properties and biological activities of GAGs in the egg components need further elucidation.…”

“…In addition to being used as an emulsifying agent in condiments and mayonnaise [8], CS has nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications in arthritis herpes virus infection, malaria, nervous tissue repair, liver regeneration, and for tumors [9]. Heparin, a highly sulfated HS, has potent functions in allergy, inflammation [10] and anticoagulation [11], and has a long history of being used as anticoagulants in advanced medical and surgical procedures [12]. Finally, KS plays a fundamental role in ocular inflammation, corneal injury, keratitis, and uveitis [13].…”

“… 87 Unlike LMWHs and warfarin, which inhibit multiple coagulation factors, NOACs target specific clotting cascade factors; NOACs are more attractive to patients and clinicians because they do not require laboratory monitoring to achieve therapeutic anticoagulation, they can be taken orally in fixed doses once or twice daily, and they have minimal food and drug–drug interactions. 41 , 54 , 88 The major limitation is the lack of specific antidotes to reverse the anticoagulant effect and the absence of readily available assays to measure the anticoagulant effect, which can be an issue when facing bleeding events or treatment failure. 55 , 87 To date, NOACs have not been rigorously evaluated in cancer patients.…”

“…A variety of diseases such as atherosclerosis, tumor, diabetes, and kidney syndrome are associated with the hypercoagulable state (Piatek et al, 2012;Geddings and Mackman, 2013;Youngwon et al, 2013;Barbosa, 2014;Elyamany et al, 2014;Ahluwalia and Sreedharanunni, 2016). It is generally believed that the occurrence of the hypercoagulable state is due to the coagulation dysfunction.…”
