In 2011, during the Obama administration (2009-2017), changes in the course of the United States' geostrategy for Asia were named America's Pacific Century; which marks the shift in the US foreign policy towards a focus on the Pacific in the 21st century, and on the great powers present in the region, mainly China. Such actions are mainly based on the geopolitics of Offensive Realism as a strategic premise. In order to oppose the Chinese rise in the interstate system and maintain the primacy of its interests in Asia, the US proposes the Indo-Pacific strategy, in order to balance the Chinese role in the continent; in addition to the formation of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), together with Japan, Australia, and India, to establish a security partnership with those considered the greatest adversaries, in the US view, to Chinese interests in the Pacific. This strategy for Asia seeks to counteract the gradual Chinese preponderance in the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, this article proposes to analyse the origins and main motivations for the establishment of a structure to contain China in the Pacific by the United States, as well as the Chinese positions and considerations for the region.

Os Estados Unidos e a China são as duas grandes potências do sistema internacional e têm ampliado progressivamente a sua assertividade competitiva. Tal disputa internacional instiga uma base comparativa com a política externa dos EUA no contexto da Guerra Fria sob a geopolítica da contenção. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar se uma nova versão de contenção estaria sendo utilizada num contexto de disputa geopolítica sino-americana para as próximas décadas. A hipótese principal seria que a política externa de Joe Biden tenha retornado aos preceitos da contenção para inviabilizar a ascensão da China no século XXI. Utilizando o método empírico-dedutivo baseado em revisão bibliográfica e análise primária de documentos oficiais, será realizada uma pesquisa apoiada no realismo nas relações internacionais visando como resultado avaliar os novos arranjos geopolíticos dos EUA baseados em uma Nova Geopolítica de Contenção como instrumento de bloqueio e contenção da China.

India is a peninsular country bounded by the lofty Himalayas in the north, is surrounded by oceans and seas on three sides and has a 7,517 km long coastline. The Indian Ocean engulfs the country in its South. It has recently re-emerged as a sphere of power politics in International Relations. The following slok of Vishnu Purana illustrates the Geo-Strategic importance of Bharat.उत्तरं यत् समुद्रस्य हिमाद्रेश्चैव दक्षिणम् |वर्षं तद् भारतं नाम भारती यत्र सन्ततिः || विष्णु पुराण २.३.१The country that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bhāratam, there dwells the descendants of Bharat.China is in India’s backyard, an expansionist and imperialist power challenging the aspects of maritime security in the region, and Pakistan is a hostile neighbour, it is high time that a comprehensive framework of India’s maritime security is developed. As an ancient civilisation, the country has a rich legacy of its naval prowess. The civilisational culture from the ancient land of Bharat spread worldwide, especially in Southeast Asian, African, Central Asian, and East Asian countries through the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean, therefore, is not merely a waterbody. Instead, it captures the essence of India’s religion and cultural wave, transcending even to the neighbouring countries. India's history, art, mythology and literature are replete with numerous instances of the importance of the Indian Ocean in the lives of the Indian people. The cultural depth of the Indian civilisation is as deep as the Indian Ocean. Therefore, this article argues about the strategic relevance of ancient India’s maritime diplomacy.
