“…Autometallography on an ultrastructural level, which was originally introduced for enhancing immunogold labeling and for detection of heavy metals in tissues (for literature see Zuber and Ziak 2001), has recently been applied to localize zinc ions in endocrine pancreas (Kristiansen et al 2001), and has now been used to solve a question of clinical importance, namely whether gold ions are released from gold implants which are in use for the treatment of osteoarthritis and pain (Danscher 2002). It was found that gold ions were released from the implanted gold, diffused into the surrounding tissue, and were accumulated in macrophages, fibroblast and in mast cell granules near connective tissue implants, and in lysosomal profiles of astrocytes and neurons near brain implants.…”
