“…In addition, there is evidence of the relation between evaluative stances and the highlight of narrative elements. This seems to confirm the findings of Fresno et al (2016), who point out that the most "semantic meanings" in audio description are the most memorized, and Vercauteren and Remael (2014) who defend that ADs with symbolic function must be more robust interpretatively. In this sense, we understand that probably, and consciously or not, the AD script analyzed joins narrative elements to appraisal in order to emphasize them.…”

“…Characters are an "essential part of a film narrative", as stated by Mazur (2015) in the ADLAB guidelines. Various authors have analysed the audio description of characters (Fresno, 2012;Fresno et al, 2016), sometimes focusing on facial expressions (Vercauteren and Orero, 2013;Mazur, 2014), and guidelines generally give specific sections on how to approach their audio description (Rai et al, 2010). Physical appearance is not always viewed as the most relevant aspect when describing characters, as they sometimes can define themselves more easily through their actions and words.…”

“…Nonetheless, and in light of what was outlined above, interesting avenues for further research open up, such as the comparison of existing ADs to see to what extent different guidelines lead to different types of AD, and/or the testing of different types of ADbased on different AD strategiesto gauge audience preferences and mental effort. Indeed, recent research (Fresno, N., Castellà, J., & Soler Vilageliu, O., 2014;Fresno, N., Castellà, J., & Soler Vilageliu, O., 2016) seems to indicate that different AD strategies lead to a different mental workload induced in the audience, and experimental studies testing different types of AD could shed some initial light on these hypotheses. The results from these tests can then be used to train audio describers and hence further improve AD both on a qualitative and quantitative level.…”
