When and how do elite soccer players sprint in match play? A longitudinal study in a professional soccer league

Abstract: The aims of this study were to examine the periods in which the maximum speed actions occurred during elite soccer matches and analyse these actions considering the effect of playing position and different contextual variables. Performance-related variables (V MAX : maximum speed; Vo: starting speed; SPD: sprinting distance; ACC MAX : maximum acceleration; DEC MAX : maximum deceleration) and sprint-related contextual variables (trajectory, ball possession, role, field area in which the action occurred) from ea… Show more

“…Reduced CODs in the 2 nd half is in-line with numerous studies observing physical performance decrements for total distance, high-intensity running and sprinting (Mohr et al 2003(Mohr et al , 2010Bradley et al 2009Bradley et al , 2010. The significant differences seen between the initial and consecutive 15 and 5-minute periods, confirm the frantic high tempo nature of those initial periods (Lovell et al 2013;Oliva-Lozano et al 2021a, 2021b and do not represent the match intensity holistically. There was no decrement observed immediately post a 5-minute peak period, suggesting no temporary fatigue effect seen in other physical output variables (Mohr et al 2003;Bradley et al 2009).…”

“…Thus, coaches and sports scientists should consider the physical performance over the 90-minute average match demand for more contextualized soccer-specific training prescriptions, especially for high-intensity activities. In this regard, having a better understanding of when and how soccer players perform high-intensity activities would be interesting too from a practical perspective [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…In this regard, medium- and large-sided games can be implemented to ensure high-speed running and sprinting exposure [ 28 ]. Moreover, players should be trained to perform at maximum intensity during the most demanding passages of play [ 29 31 ] while integrating a contextualized approach [ 32 , 33 ].…”
