Which cognitive processes support learning during small-group discussion? The role of providing explanations and listening to others

Abstract: Seventy students participated in an experiment to measure the effects of either providing explanations or listening during small group discussions on recall of related subject-matter studied after the discussion. They watched a video of a small group discussing a problem. In the first experimental condition, the video was stopped at various points in time, enabling the participants to verbally respond to the discussion. In the second condition, they listened to the same discussion, without contributing. In the… Show more

“…As students gain knowledge in the field and practice self -directed learning they will improve their critical thinking skills over time . This is supported by several studies where PBL benefits were seen in long-term information retention (Loyens et al, 2015;Prosser & Sze, 2014;Strobel & Van Barneveld, 2009;Van Blankenstein, Dolmans, Van der Vleuten, & Schmidt, 2011).…”

“…This would inhibit learning, since group discussion often aids in cognitive processing in the form of receiving and offering explanations of concepts and ideas. (Blankenstein, Dolmans, van der Vleuten,& Schmidt, 2011). Additionally, boys tend to "externalize" their stress (Achenbach, 2009) making them stand out in a classroom environment.…”

“…Research on small group learning can be challenging, because highly dynamic group processes can affect students' learning outcomes (Van Blankenstein et al, 2011). In the present study, we were interested in the role of studying integrated model answers versus student-constructed answers during the self-study phase in PBL, so we wanted to rule out the influences of group dynamics on student outcomes.…”
