Which spatial discretization for distributed hydrological models? Proposition of a methodology and illustration for medium to large-scale catchments

Abstract: Abstract. Distributed hydrological models are valuable tools to derive distributed estimation of water balance components or to study the impact of land-use or climate change on water resources and water quality. In these models, the choice of an appropriate spatial discretization is a crucial issue. It is obviously linked to the available data, their spatial resolution and the dominant hydrological processes. For a given catchment and a given data set, the "optimal" spatial discretization should be adapted to… Show more

“…model setup requires choosing the simulated processes, their representation and consistent catchments discretization. The followed methodology is the one outlined by Dehotin and Braud (2008) who propose a catchment discretization consistent with the modeling objectives, the process representation and the available data. The discretization (Fig.…”

“…Such flash flood events are characterized by time-and space scales that conventional measurement networks are not always able to sample (Creutin and Borga, 2003;Kirchner, 2006). In addition, flash floods are locally rare events, so they are difficult to capture by field-based experiments .…”

“…In this respect, the schematization is adapted to the engineering objectives (i.e., which processes should be simulated and where), while the parameterization is only linked to the available information (cf. Dehotin and Braud, 2008).…”
