Which Spectral Bands of WorldView-2 Are Useful in Remote Sensing of Water Depth? A Case Study in Coral Reefs

Abstract: Although visible bands of high-resolution multispectral imagery are used for bathymetry, the relative utility of different bands is poorly understood. Therefore, we evaluated the relative utility of the six visible bands of WorldView-2. We statistically selected the visible bands that gave the best accuracy under different situations, tallying how often each band was included in the best combination. The average frequency was greater than 50% for every band and differed between bands by only 17%. We conclude t… Show more

“…Sentinel-2 may provide a way to use other satellites more effectively. Accordingly, Sentinel-2 might offer a low turbidity reference data set that can be used to inform mapping conducted with the various commercial very high-resolution sensors such as the World-View fleet [14,26,58] or the novel CubeSats from Planet [19,29]. On the other scale, Landsat has a four-decade history using Thematic Mapper, and has been shown to be useful for some SDB in clear water [10,21,59,60], even with 30 m pixels.…”

“…However, reliable methodologies for evaluating or correcting the impact of turbidity on SDB are rare [21,22]. Likewise, given the large spatial extent and inaccessibility of many coastal regions, there is a pressing need for an Earth Observation program at appropriate spatial, spectral and temporal scales to fulfil the objective of operational cost-effective coastal monitoring [25,26]. The European Commission (EC) and the European Space Agency (ESA) have recently identified the need for improved Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and bathymetry in order to develop the Copernicus-mission based coastal monitoring programme [27].…”

“…Several studies have successfully calculated water depth for the deep ocean water (greater than 20 m) using high resolution WV-2 satellite imagery [2,19,20]. Madden [21] successfully calculated bathymetry for water depths greater than 2 m using WV-2 imagery, hydrographic surveys, and the Stumpf et al [5] relative ratio equation.…”

“…In recent years several studies [15] [23] [25] [27] have proven that a rapid assessment of bathymetry can be remotely achieved, provided that i) a multi/hyper-spectral optical image is available, acquired by satellite/airborne sensors, and ii) a sufficient number of in situ measurements is available, acquired by unmanned vehicles (USVs, AUVs, gliders, etc. ).…”
