White-light femtosecond Lidar at 100 TW power level

Abstract: We characterized the white-light supercontinuum emission by a sub-petawatt laser system in the atmosphere via light detection and ranging measurements. As much as 1 J of supercontinuum is generated in the atmosphere, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 30 %. This generation occurs at altitudes below 100 m. The high initial beam intensity results in the saturation of the number of self-guided filaments. Therefore, the “photon bath” surrounding the filaments strongly contributes to the white-light genera… Show more

“…While the Teramobile system, for instance, provide Terawatt (10 12 W) peak and some watts average powers, the current and near future planned laser facilities aimed at delivering 10-100 Petawatt (10 16 -10 17 W) and multi-kW average powers (Bashinov et al 2014); this will correspond to 1000-10 000 Teramobile systems coherently combined together! A first step towards scaling up to these extreme levels was realized by performing laser induced water condensation at the 0.1-0.2 PW levels at the HZDR-Rossendorf (Petrarca et al 2011), ALLS-Montreal (Matthews et al 2013) and FLAME-Frascati facilities (Petrarca et al 2014).…”

“…The beam diameter of 30 mm has a cross section of 700 mm , corresponding to more than 26 mm /filament. This value lies far from the geometrical saturation, which amounts to only a few mm /filament 63 . Therefore, spatial congestion is not the factor limiting the number of filaments.…”

“…High energy ultrashort laser pulse is widely used in industrial micromachining/ modification [1], laser surgery [2], and defense technology [3]. Despite the rapid development of high energy pico-and femtosecond laser technologies, the flexible delivery of ultrashort laser pulses via optical fiber remains a challenge [4].…”
