The seafood industry generates waste, including shells, bones, intestines, and wastewater. The discards are nutrient-rich, containing varying concentrations of carotenoids, proteins, chitin, and other minerals. Thus, it is imperative to subject seafood waste, including shrimp waste (SW), to secondary processing and valorization for demineralization and deproteination to retrieve industrially essential compounds. Although several chemical processes are available for SW processing, most of them are inherently ecotoxic. Bioconversion of SW is cost-effective, ecofriendly, and safe. Microbial fermentation and the action of exogenous enzymes are among the significant SW bioconversion processes that transform seafood waste into valuable products. SW is a potential raw material for agrochemicals, microbial culture media, adsorbents, therapeutics, nutraceuticals, and bio-nanomaterials. This review comprehensively elucidates the valorization approaches of SW, addressing the drawbacks of chemically mediated methods for SW treatments. It is a broad overview of the applications associated with nutrient-rich SW, besides highlighting the role of major shrimp-producing countries in exploring SW to achieve safe, ecofriendly, and efficient bio-products.

This study aimed to determine the zooplankton species composition in super-intensive whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) tanks. The research was conducted from January to May 2021 in Bac Lieu City, Bac Lieu province, Vietnam. Eleven sampling times were divided into two periods, the nursery phase (six times) and the grow-out phase (five times) of shrimp culture. The results showed that water quality parameters fluctuated dramatically during the culture period, in which some nutrient concentrations tended to increase at the end of the shrimp culture period. Nine zooplankton species were recorded, of which five species belonged to Protozoa, three Rotifera species, and one Copepoda species. The number of zooplankton species did not differ significantly among the sampling periods. Protozoa had the highest species composition and density during most of the shrimp culture period. Copepoda was only identified in the nursery stage of shrimp culture. The species component of zooplankton had a close positive correlation with temperature, but their abundance did not have a significant relationship with water quality parameters because each species was affected by the different water quality parameters. Zoothamnium sp. had significantly positive correlations with total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrate (NO3)-, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis had a strong relationship with TP content, whereas Dartintinnus alderae had a strong relationship with alkalinity. Protozoa dominance in shrimp tanks could affect shrimp growth, decreasing the economic efficiency of shrimp farming. Therefore, the results of this study contribute to water quality and natural food management to improve shrimp productivity.

Physicochemical and Biological Characteristics of Shrimp Pond Sludge in the Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam

This study has been carried out to analyze the physical and biological indicators of shrimp pond sludge samples obtained from the Phu Vang and Phu Loc districts of the Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam. All standard methodologies have been used to analyze the selected parameters like pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphate, and microbial density. The results of the study revealed that the sludge was characterized by a neutral to alkaline pH (6.9 - 7.5), and the total organic carbon content was in the range of 103.8–173.5 mg/kg. The sludge was rich in organic matter (17.8–29.9%), total nitrogen (13.5–32.5 g/kg), and total phosphate (7.9-20.1 g/kg). Further, in the case of the microbial density of pathogenic microorganisms, the density of total bacteria, coliform, E.coli, Salmonella spp., Vibrio spp., and Clostridium spp. was also estimated at two opposing weather conditions (spring, February to March; summer, June to July). The microbial community increased rapidly during the cool spring months. The total bacterial levels were recorded as 8.77 log10 CFU/mL in the Phu Loc district and 9.11 log10 CFU/mL in the Phu Vang district. The levels decreased during the hot summer months, and the level of total bacteria, Coliform, E.coli, Salmonella spp., and Vibrio was reported 2.57, 1.49, 1.06, 0.56, and l2.54 log10 CFU/mL respectively from the Phu Loc district of Vietnam. The results obtained using the anaerobic decomposition model showed that on the 60th day, the amount of CH4 generated at the high output value for the Phu Vang district was 22385 ppm. The results reported here revealed that CH4 gas can be potentially produced from shrimp waste sludge in this province.
