Abstract: Fifty case studies of adolescent women seeking contraceptives for the first time suggest no direct relationship between the initiation of sexual activity and the availability of contraceptives at family planning clinics. However, the persistence of sexual activity, once initiated, may be influenced by the availability of contraceptives when the adolescent realizes she wants to continue sexual activity and does not want to become pregnant. “…Establishing motives for pregnancy is not a simple task and it is clear that a division into planned and unplanned pregnancies is a gross over-simplification (Hass, 1974;Furstenberg, 1976;Miller, 1978). The sample was divided into four categories based on their reported response on first learning of the pregnancy ( Table 2).…”

Sex education may also lead to a delay in the onset of sexual activity (Baldo et al, 1993).…”

“…Black adolescent males reported higher rates of condom use than did White adolescent males (Marsiglio, 1993;Sonenstein, Pleck, & Ku, 1989), although both groups reported low rates of consistent use of condoms . Further, we are beginning to understand the association of contextual factors like family structure (Furstenberg, Morgan, Moore, & Peterson, 1987;Newcomb, Huba, & Bentler, 1986;Newcomer & Udry, 1987), peer relationships (Billy & Udry, 1985a,b;Kornfield, 1985), and partner characteristics (DeLamater & MacCorquodale, 1979) to adolescent sexual behavior and condom use. 363…”
