Who uses mental health services in Australia? An analysis of data from the National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing

Abstract: The factors most strongly related to Australians' use of mental health services are their having a diagnosed affective, anxiety or substance-abuse disorder and their self-identifying as having depression or anxiety. Although there are regional inequalities in levels of utilisation of mental health services, these are seen more with specialist services than with those provided by general practitioners.

“…The purpose of these measures is not to diagnose psychiatric disorders but to detect differences and time trends in psychological distress and mental health among population subgroups (Korkeila 2000). Self-rated psychological symptoms also correlate reasonably well with clinically assessed mental health status (Hoeymans et al 2004) and with the use of mental health services (Parslow and Jorm 2000).…”

“…It is thus possible to think that this category (i.e., presence of only one mental health problem) mainly includes persons with a substance abuse diagnosis, which has been found to be associated with more frequent utilization of mental health services. 46,50,53 Nevertheless, the current descriptive findings reveal that, in general, participants who present only one mental health problem are using more physical health services. This result might be explained by the fact that this category includes mainly persons with a substance abuse diagnosis.…”

“…According to some researchers, 43,50,51 the severity of psychiatric symptoms predicts a greater utilization of mental health services. Although the severity of mental health symptoms has not been examined in the present study because of the nature of the variables, a multiplicity of problems within a single person appears to have an influence on the utilization of health services.…”
