Whole-Body MR Imaging in the Diagnosis of Polymyositis

Abstract: Whole-body turbo short tau inversion recovery imaging is a convenient complete method of evaluating patients with muscle inflammation caused by polymyositis. This imaging technique allows us to evaluate the total inflammatory burden by revealing multiple muscle groups not seen with standard protocols.

“…In 2002, O 0 Connell et al published a WB MRI protocol containing only turbo-STIR sequences to evaluate patients with polymyositis (O'Connell et al 2002). In agreement with other authors (Lenk et al 2004) we think that a neuromuscular WB MRI protocol should include both STIR and T1w sequences to detect both muscle edema and fatty infiltration reliably.…”

“…Diffuse signal intensity (wide arrow on Gracilis) was represented for score 3. are helpful to detect fatty degeneration of affected muscles (6,7). MRI can be used as guidance for biopsy in an area of active disease and thus may decrease the false-negative rate of 10-25% without imaging guidance (4,8). It can also assess the extent of lesions and monitoring therapeutic response in patients with IIMs has been reported previously (9)(10)(11).…”
