“…Thus, a serotonin precursor 11C-5 hydroxy tryptophan was developed as a tracer for PET-scanning, which can be concentrated within carcinoid tumors [13] . Findings using this application are encouraging, allowing the identification of the primary tumor in 84% of cases [14,15] . Primary carcinoid tumors and distant metastasis in patients affected by neuroendocrine tumors are better detected by otreoscan scintigraphy compared to the CT scan and the MRI [16] .…”

“…Therefore, several tracers directed toward the specific characteristics of carcinoid tumors, for example, 6-[ 18 F]fluorodopamine ( 18 F-dopa) and 11 C-labeled 5-HTP, were developed for PET imaging in these tumors [45,46]. Although the availability of PET scanning for the clinical diagnosis of carcinoid tumors is still limited, promising results have been described in diagnosing small lesions and lymph node metastases with a sensitivity of up to 65% for 18 F-dopa PET [47].…”

“…CT scanning of the abdomen and thorax as well as somatostatin receptor scintigraphy are the major imaging modalities used to establish tumor staging and localization initially [13,14,40,41] . 68-Gallium-DOTATOC-PET/CT is a new, very sensitive method for visualizing (metastatic) intestinal NETs [42][43][44] ; however, this costly technique is not available everywhere. Due to frequent carcinoid heart disease (in up to 30%-60% of patients with carcinoid syndrome), every patient with carcinoid syndrome or with elevated urinary 5-HIAA levels should be echocardiographed [13] .…”
