Whole Genome Sequencing, Antibiotic Resistance, and Epidemiology Features of Nontyphoidal Salmonella Isolated From Diarrheic Children: Evidence From North China

Abstract: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) in children remains a growing burden on public health and often causes children to be hospitalized with diarrheic symptoms. In this work, 260 strains of human Salmonella isolated from Jilin, China were characterized by serotypes and antimicrobial resistance using whole genome sequencing (WGS). The most prevalent serotype was Salmonella enteritidis (47.3%), followed by S. I 4,[5],12:i:- (33.1%), and Salmonella Typhimurium (7.3%). Furthermore, the consistency between resistance phen… Show more

“…However, all 102 strains were successfully sequenced. Consequently, all 102 strains were utilized for the further antimicrobial susceptibility testing and whole genomic sequencing ( Zhao et al, 2022 ; Petrin et al, 2023 ). Among these, 50 strains were from the northern region, and 52 were from the southern region.…”

“…Generally, S. typhimurium infections are uncomplicated and do not require special treatment; however, they can become serious and even life-threatening in young children and immunocompromised populations. Children younger than ve years of age are especially susceptible to S. typhimurium, with main clinical manifestations of acute fever episodes, vomiting, and diarrhea; furthermore, dehydration and bloody purulent stool can present in severe cases [5,6]. S. typhimurium-caused diarrhea usually lasts one week to ten days [2,7].…”

“…Molecular analysis revealed how S. Typhimurium manipulates host cell signaling through effector proteins. Recent studies show that S. Enteritidis is the most prevalent serovar among Salmonella isolates from children with diarrhea ( Zhao et al., 2022 ). However, the contribution and related signaling pathways of SPI-1 and SPI-2 in inflammation caused by S. Enteritidis during the course of infection remain unclear.…”
