Why cosmic voids matter: nonlinear structure & linear dynamics

Abstract: We use the Magneticum suite of state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations to identify cosmic voids based on the watershed technique and investigate their most fundamental properties across different resolutions in mass and scale. This encompasses the distributions of void sizes, shapes, and content, as well as their radial density and velocity profiles traced by the distribution of cold dark matter particles and halos. We also study the impact of various tracer properties, such as their sparsity and… Show more

“…The density profiles of voids traced by biased objects are deeper than those traced by dark matter particles. The radius corresponding to a fixed internal spherical density contrast is consequently larger for the former (e.g., Sutter et al 2014a;Pollina et al 2017;Schuster et al 2023). To include this effect in the void size function theory, Contarini et al (2019) proposed a parameterization of the Vdn model nonlinear underdensity threshold as a function of the tracer effective bias, b eff :…”

“…The number of cosmic voids identified by the algorithm is strictly related to both the survey volume and the number density of the objects used to trace voids (see, e.g., Schuster et al 2023). We report in the left panel of Figure 1 the number density of galaxies computed in concentric redshift shells, n gal (z), for both BOSS and PATCHY samples.…”

“…Indeed, in addition to regions of excess energy density, ongoing studies probe cosmological models through observations of the dynamics and distribution of voids and 'supervoids'. Similarly, predictive features for the new theory with such a negative energy contribution might hence be testable, and potentially help account for any particularly large or deep voids or even apparent anomalies such as the CMB 'Cold Spot', which appears to be of primordial origin (see for example [74,75,76,77,78,79]).…”

“…Two void properties deserve special attention: (1) the ellipticity and (2) the density contrast (Biswas et al 2010;Lavaux & Wandelt 2010;Sutter et al 2014aSutter et al , 2015Kreisch et al 2022;Schuster et al 2023). In this work, we intend to use them, plus the traditional void radius, to train neural networks to perform likelihood-free inference on the value of the cosmological parameters.…”
