Why do we need an Addiction supplement focused on methamphetamine?

Abstract: Methamphetamine is a substantial public health problem in many communities in the United States and in other parts of the world. In order to bring new knowledge about methamphetamine to policy makers, clinicians and researchers, this volume has compiled a set of articles containing new information about the drug and its effects. The articles contain information presented by researchers at two special methamphetamine meetings sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 2005.

“…This influence on METH-induced behavior is perhaps relevant for understanding human patterns of METH use and abuse. For example, it is intriguing to consider that a contributing factor to the worldwide rise in problem METH use (Rawson and Condon 2007) might be the documented shift to a route of administration (i.e., injection and smoking) that offers more opportunity for associations between drug effects and salient cues compared to the oral route of administration that is common for AMPH.…”

“…Methamphetamine (MA) abuse and dependence are major public health problems (Rawson and Condon, 2007), with amphetamines being second only to marijuana in prevalence of worldwide illicit drug use (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC, 2011)). Although the initiation of MA use in the United States has declined slightly since 2002(SAMHSA, 2009, treatment admissions for MA has more than doubled between 1998(SAMHSA, 2009.…”
