Why offshore wind energy?

Abstract: At the beginning of 2010, only 2000 wind megawatts had been installed offshore. Although the first offshore wind farm experiment took place in 1990, most of the facilities built up to now have been pilot projects. Then, offshore wind power can be considered as an incipient market. However, just at this moment, the growth of this technology finally seems to be happening, being several countries at the top of its development (the United Kingdom, Denmark, Holland, Sweden and Germany). This current situation, the … Show more

“…This paper aims to shed light on macroscopic information for policy-makers and investors by investigating the large-scale potential of China's offshore wind energy from the perspective of current technical, spatial and economic constraints and its 1 Intertidal offshore, which is in the area between high-and low-water marks, as is defined by China Meteorological Administration's Wind Energy and Solar Energy Resources Evaluation Centre.…”

“…Since then, several offshore wind farms have been built, mainly as demonstration projects for acquiring knowledge and testing the technology (Esteban et al 2011). The policy incentive for constructing commercial offshore wind farms in Sweden has been weak.…”

“…By improving wind power generation, most of the installation projects were oriented towards large-scale wind farms (WFs) interconnected to the power system [3]. Reduction of conventional generating units in the power system results in reduction of system inertia and hence the overall system frequency will be affected.…”
