Why Taranaki women choose to have a mastectomy when suitable for breast conservation treatment

Abstract: The rate of BCT in Taranaki is low, despite it being offered by surgeons to the majority of patients. Local availability of radiotherapy may increase the BCT rate to a level more consistent with larger centres in New Zealand. Care must be taken to provide neutral patient guidance.

“…There has been a variety of quantitative studies and statistical analyses exploring breast cancer in New Zealand. These address a number of issues about screening (Brunton et al 2005;Curtis et al 2005b;Page and Taylor 2008;Richardson et al 2005); demographic issues related to race and socio-economic status (Cunningham et al 2010;Curtis et al 2005a;Jeffreys et al 2005;McCredie et al 1999;Sarfati et al 2006); rural and urban locations (Gollop et al 2009); and support services (Marsh et al 2010). “…Bourdieu's concepts of doxa and illusio also emphasised the need for promotion of public sector cancer services in New Zealand. 46 Gollop et al (2009) has already begun investigating breast cancer issues for rural and urban Taranaki women, exploring reasoning behind choosing a mastectomy when they could have kept their breast. Professor Susan Dovey at the Otago School of Medicine is also investigating treatment choices among New Zealand rural and urban breast cancer patients (The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation 2009).…”
