Small‐signal stability is an important task and key research in electrical engineering for networks. This research article focuses on the implementation of a multi‐objective approach for choosing an optimal location for Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to quantify a power system's small‐signal stability by maximizing the signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) in the system. The novelty of this research lies in the implementation of Dingo Optimization (DOX) technique along with the Prony Analysis (PA) approach for the assessment of small‐signal stability in standard grid networks. The voltage angle, amplitude and the range of frequencies are measured by the optimal placement of PMUs, which primarily focus on the multi‐signal PA. To achieve the objective of this research, DOX integrated with the multi‐signal PA approach is used to determine the ideal position for PMU placement by considering maximum redundancy and optimizing the signal to noise ratio to a maximum level. The effectiveness of the DOX strategy is established with improved accuracy and fewer disturbances by optimizing the electromechanical oscillations of the system. The implementation of the DOX approach for attaining the best value of the maximized SNR is obtained by analyzing a wide set of conditions, perturbations, and additive noise, which provides an accurate assessment of damping ratio (DR) and frequency (f) of electromechanical oscillations. Numerical results obtained from the standard IEEE test systems (14, 39, 57, 118, and 300 bus systems) are compared with the existing methods in the literature. The statistical indices demonstrate that under the highly limited optimization context selected, the intended optimizer functions satisfactorily.

As intelligent grid has been fully promoted in recent years, electric information acquisition system has become an important factor restricting its development. In addition to the development of user-side service functions, the communication mode of the acquisition system has also become crucial. In view of the current problems of low data transmission efficiency, inadequate data acquisition and low real-time monitoring efficiency of intelligent meters, this paper proposes a method for collecting and returning electric power data based on an operator's fiber optic network. The method adds an embedded fiber network unit module to the intelligent meter, encodes electric power data and other parameters of the intelligent meter according to the DL/T645 and Q/GDW376.1 protocols of the automatic meter reading system, and realizes the meter reading function, high-speed broadband access network function, and broadband Internet access function for users through the TCP/IP protocol of fiber communication technology and the existing power line carrier technology. The experimental results show that the device has good operating status, high data acquisition success rate, and satisfactory speed test results. This method provides a new direction for realizing the informatization and automation of the intelligent grid, and provides a new way for user broadband access through combination with power line carrier.

The challenges currently faced by network operators are difficult and complex. Presently, various types of energy sources with random generation, energy storage units operating in charging or discharging mode and consumers with different operating characteristics are connected to the power grid. The network is being expanded and modernised. This contributes to the occurrence of various types of network operating states in practice. The appearance of a significant number of objects with random generation in the power system complicates the process of planning and controlling the operation of the power system. It is therefore necessary to constantly search for new methods and algorithms that allow operators to adapt to the changing operating conditions of the power grid. There are many different types of method in the literature, with varying effectiveness, that have been or are used in practice. So far, however, no one ideal, universal method or methodology has been invented that would enable (with equal effectiveness) all problems faced by the power system to be solved. This article presents an overview and a short description of research works available in the literature in which the authors have used modern methods to solve various problems in the field of power engineering. The article is an introduction to the special issue entitled Advances in the Application of Methods Based on Artificial Intelligence and Optimisation in Power Engineering. It is an overview of various current problems and the various methods used to solve them, which are used to cope with difficult situations. The authors also pointed out potential research gaps that can be treated as areas for further research.
