Wide Area Monitoring through Synchrophasor Measurement

Abstract: Considered as one of the most significant developments of smart grid technology, wide area monitoring system (WAMS) utilizing synchrophasor measurements has been expected to help create a more reliable and efficient electric power infrastructure. The use of phasor measurement units (PMUs) can help with understanding, predicting, or even controlling the status of power grid stability in real time. A power system frequency monitoring network (FNET/GridEye) was first proposed in 2001 and then established in 2004.… Show more

“…However, with the development of filtering techniques [27][28][29], the noise introduced in signals can be largely mitigated. In addition, most signal-sending devices in power systems, such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), are already equipped with proper filters [30]. In this context, the application of D-term-based delay compensation schemes becomes a feasible solution.…”

“…Wide area measurement system (WAMS) uses synchronous phase angle measurement technology to realize real-time and high-speed acquisition of synchronous phase angle and main data of power network by gradually laying out synchronous phase angle measurement unit (PMU) of key measuring points in the whole network. PMU can ensure the synchronization of the whole network data through the global positioning system (GPS) [12]. Timing information and data are stored and sent to the main station at the same time.…”
